Weighty issue. . .her weight, estimated at 600 pounds, made [flying her to the hospital] impossible. . .

Town N Country, Florida – A woman is in stable condition after being ejected through the sunroof of her SUV during an accident.

Thirty-seven-year-old Ruth Matthews told paramedics that another vehicle cut her off in traffic, and she took evasive action to avoid a crash. Her Isuzu Amigo rolled over and she was thrown through the sunroof and onto the roadway. Investigators say she was not wearing her seatbelt.

Paramedics initially tried to fly Matthews to Tampa General Hospital, but her weight, estimated at 600 pounds, made it impossible. Emergency crews were able to transport her to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.

Authorities are continuing their investigation.

At that weight, I don’t understand how she could get into an SUV, much less drive. Unless this was some super-modded SUV where the front seat was taken out, she sat in the backseat, and used hand controls to steer. I’ve seen people in cars before who look like they can barely see over their own body, and their arms can barely touch the steering wheel. I can’t imagine them being able to “take evasive action to avoid a crash” unless that means turning the wheel as much as your little dinosaur arms will let you and closing your eyes.

I’m confused. I guess I just assumed that, at 600 lbs, a woman would be home-bound and unable to get around by herself (sans assistance), so something about this sounds and feels …off.
