I need your music suggestions.

I love to work with music blasting. And while sometimes that means classical, it usually means dancy, upbeat, poppy stuff that has bass. The problem is, I feel like I’ve been repeating the same songs over and over and it’s time to inject some fresh blood into my music IV.

I like female musicians almost exclusively, and I have the musical taste of your average 11 or 12-year old girl. Here are some of the groups I listen to on repeat right now:

The Millionaires
Lady Gaga
Britney Spears
Little Boots
Avril Lavigne
No Doubt
Lords of Acid
Taylor Swift

I already posted this on Twitter but thought I’d carry it over to my blog too. Do you have any suggestions to add to my excellent, high quality list of musical talent? Links to Youtube videos or audio tracks of said music get extra credit.

And in case you missed it a while ago, here I am dancing to some Lords of Acid:

Metalmom posted “Kiss You Off” by Scissor Sisters, and I really like it. The album I got, Ta-Da, is very dance oriented. In fact, when I bought it, the guy said there wasn’t a song I couldn’t dance to.

    Link for extra credit:

If you are interested, I can let you store an off-site backup copy of the album. Send me an email.

I don’t think my other stuff would interest you. I am more interested in male singers, and more Alternative Rock/Metal

  2. Pop and Ice

Oh God – Lords of Acid! Forget about them! (They’ve been locked up in a basement cabinet from when the chillins was small – but now! – they is adults and I can bring it out…..maybe).

Ok, obviously anything by Liz Phair. Please tell me you know Liz.

Classical: Portuguese Love Theme from Love Actually

Crush: Jellyhead (love it!), Penthouse Girl, Basement Boy

Since you like Taylor Swift, you might like Suzy Bogguss

  3. Karen Sugarpants

Hm. Strangely missing is Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson. That is about as pop tart sweet as I know. I don’t do bubble gum pop music.

    Here’s some pop tart music…
    Avril Lavigne – Girlfriend
    Michelle Branch – Breathe
    Vanessa Carlton – 1000 Miles
    Jessica Simpson – With You

But, if you are willing to go a little edgier, you can try on:
The Ting Tings *That’s Not My Name*
    Little Boots *New In Town*
    Liz Phair *Everything to Me*

  5. Cheri

Well since you listed most of my favs and someone already said Liz Phair aand Katy Perry ll I have left to say is Shakira (her older stuff-I haven’t listened to much of her new stuff).

  6. Nina the slackmistress

    Massive Attack
    Liz Phair
    Dresden Dolls
    Veruca Salt

I don’t know if you’ll dig it, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE (as in, listen to CONSTANTLY in the car) The Dirtbombs. It’s dirty rock n’ roll.

Also, I think you’ll love Andre Williams.

He doesn’t fit ANY of your requirements, except that he did release an album that was regarded as the “sleaziest album ever.” But it’s GOOD. Pinky swear.

  7. Zoeyjane

My fallbacks include Jamiroquai, The Offspring, Garbage, Missy Elliot, some of Stevie Wonder’s funkier stuff, The Mars Volta and Bloodhound Gang. That’s my cleaning list, right there, plus about half of your mangina music above.

A*Teens… They started as a kiddie ABBA tribute band, but their later albums are actually really good new pop. The two girls singing lead are pretty darn talented.

Hoku… I like her better than Britney and Avril. Her debut album is gold, and I love every song on it. Sadly, she went indie after that, so her music is hard to find, but you won’t care because her first album is so good. Trivia… it’s Don Ho’s daughter, Hoku Ho!

Bananarama… Their latest stuff doesn’t get much airplay, but it’s better than anything they did in the 80’s. It’s mostly dance, but it’s got poppy overtures. “Feel for You” off their album “Drama” is a pretty good indicator of what you get.

West End Girls… A two-girl Pet Shop Boys tribute band that does a remarkably good job with the material. Kind of hard to get, as they don’t have much representation here in the USA.

It’s a shame Katie hasn’t been able to find a job teaching. She’d be working the middle school age range and be able to give you all kinds of recommendations. She knew about Ke$ha about three months before you did.

    the millionaires? REALLY?! COME ON!

no but actually, if tegan & sarah doesn’t have you dancing around in your underwear and/or singing in front of the mirror within 5 minutes, you’re dead inside.

  11. Faiqa

Sometimes, you and Tariq are alike in ways that scare the ever loving shit out of me. I feel like if he had been born here, was a white guy and had no moral code whatsoever, he’d be just like you. Sigh.

P.S. That video is awesome. You look like my baby when he’s trying to tell me he has a poopy diaper. Hey, that’s a compliment because my baby is CUTE!

  12. Ian

Did someone say the Veronicas? Yum.

    In that genre area, which I believe is called ‘singing with fangitas’, I’ve these;

    Girls Aloud
    The Saturdays
    Cheryl Cole cum Tweedy
    La Roux
    Jo Jo

For my current musical highlights, you’ll have to head over to my blog. It’s the post before I tell the world I am now with more arsehole.

  13. PaintingChef

    Reeve Oliver (okay… they’re guys… but they’re GREAT!)

    Go Sailor!

Dirtie Blonde (I think you would LOVE them.)

Amie Miriello (Dirtie Blonde lead singer)

    Kate Voegele

    Lush (oldie but a goodie…)

The Apples in Stereo (more guys but also? AWESOME!)

    That’s all I’ve got for now… whew… I’m exhausted man!

  14. Stacy

    I would add

    The Scissor Sisters
    Lily Allen
    The Ting Tings
    Vampire Weekend

My husband calls my list (which includes many of your faves) the “Big Gay Hit List”. Enjoy!!

  15. melissa

okay, i’m not the one most people look to for advise on music, but you might find the following dance-worthy:

    Chris Brown
    Jason Mraz
    Pussycat Dolls
    TATU (old stuff!)

and then here’s my personal list of shake-yo-booty, goth-style. (you know…for the guy-liner freak in you, avitable!)

Mindless Self Indulgence (sure to make you dance! and the lyrics are gut-busting laughable.)
    Billy Idol
    Franz Ferdinand
    Depeche Mode
    In Flames
Methods of Mayhem (this is old!)

and bc i’m in love with this artist:

you may just regret you asked this question publicly after reviewing my list of personal faves.

  16. Stacey

Sorry but I have no suggestions right now. I really just came over to see what others are suggesting and steal some recomendations.

While I like a little bit of everything I’m predominately a hip hop lover. I have the musical tastes of an 12-16 year old boy.

Oh and Amazing Greis is right on with Party in the UsA by Miley Cyrus. Definitely a guilty pleasure!

  17. Heather

P Diddy and Nicole Scherzinger’s “Come to Me”
Pussycat Dolls’ “Don’t Cha,” “Buttons,” “Wait a Minute” (with Timbaland), “Beep”
    Shakira’s “She Wolf”
    Ciara’s “Goodies” and “1-2 Step”
Fergie’s solo stuff or with the Black Eyed Peas

    You Tube Links:

Then again I prefer 80s music and some country. My kid is into techno, and my husband prefers heavy metal and is a big Shirley Manson fan.

  18. Marta

I think you would like the A*Teens too.

Maybe it just me but it seem like a lot of people do not read what you wrote that you like mostly girly poppy music and are instead want to post what just what THEY like.

  19. mew

don’t know why i’m answering since you typically disregard ANY of my suggestions
for a YEAR or more -_-

    to start, check out:
metric, dragonette, css (cansei de ser sexy), ladyhawke, ellie goulding, la roux, kelly 8, the gossip, crystal castles, theStart, new young pony club and amanda blank.

  20. Kel

A little late to the party as I am just getting to reading posts in my reader. A few I would suggest:

Depeche Mode – especially the razormaid mixes if you can find them
    The Beatles
    Rolling Stones
    Guns N Roses
    The Gorillaz
    The Veronicas
    Kings of Leon
    The Strokes

    Just a few 🙂

  21. Shelli

I’m too lazy to see if others have suggested these artists, so here’s my suggestions…

    Brandi Carlile
    Beth Hart
    Anna Nalick
Lady Antebellum (which is really a group and not a girl or girl band)
    Ani DiFranco
    Concrete Blonde
    The Lost Trailers
    Saving Abel
    Big & Rich
    Shooter Jennings
    The Fray
    Black Eyed Peas
    Puddle of Mudd
Evanescence (although I admit it’s not for everyone)

You can find me on Look at my whole library. It’s a bunch of everything.

  22. Nancy

Well, if you want chick artists… there’s
    The Donnas:
Michelle Branch (since you like Taylor Swift)
    Since you’re going a little country….the Wreckers:
    Kendall Payne:

When you’re ready to sprout your balls back again, I’d suggest my current top five male artists/groups:
Bob Schneider: this video’s crappy, but get on Pandora and listen to him.
    Ben Folds:
    Ben Harper:

  23. rose the rad sugar

we totes have similar taste in music. i suggest:

    the XX
    la roux
    miike snow
    the blow
    au revoir simone
    the bird and the bee
    lily allen
    the knife

look for a series of albums called “leave them all behind” – super amazing indie dance mixs. i can fwd you a link to dwnld if you so chose. holler at me via g-mail and i can send.

  24. Gina

While she does not fit into the bubblegum pop camp, Ani DiFranco is one woman musician that you should absolutely include in the music you listen to. She has intelligent and insightful lyrics and a hell of a lot of spunk. Oh and she is very cute too.

Best album to start with is Living In Clip, double CD live set.
