Avitable's rules for life

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I've had this post idea from a post by Tracy in my drafts for a long time. Simply put, she came up with her rules for life. And now here are mine:

1. The world needs garbage men and house cleaners. It's not classism or economic discrimination to pay people to do jobs that you wouldn't do. It's how the world works.

2. Everyone has an infinite capacity to love, and you will never run out of love for one person by loving another.

3. Once you realize that I'm almost always right, and that I've thought of everything, things will be much easier for all of us.

4. There's no such thing as putting too much effort into proving a point.

5. Funny trumps all.

6. Everyone will disappoint you at least once in your life. Forgive them. It's when it becomes a habit that you need to cut them out of your life.

7. Controlling your situation is the best way to make sure that you're not caught unawares. "Winging it" is a good way to make sure that you end up looking like an idiot.

8. Words only have as much power as you give them. If you ignore them, they will lose all effectiveness.

9. No matter how bad things are for you, there's always someone else out there who is worse. Look for the positive aspects first.

What are your rules for life?

(Once again, no radio show tonight. We're still trying to recover!)

Avitaweek 2009: The origins of Avitable

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

In yesterday's mail, I received a package from my Papa (aka my grandfather) that showed exactly where I come from. My sense of humor, my sarcasm, my overall outlook on life – I have him to thank.

Here are the three pages that made up the package I received:

He's kept this newspaper clipping for 22 years.

Could I look any more androgynous at age 10?

To be fair, they were used in elaborate war scenarios along with my Transformers.

Thanks, Papa!

As you might be aware, I have a birthday coming up. What? You didn't now? I haven't mentioned it enough? Well, it's true. You can buy my love here or here!

However, today's not all about me. It's also the birthday of two of my favorite women who live in the computer. The first one is Tracy Kaply. She's turning 104 today, so go wish her a happy birthday. The other is Nina from Readerwritesmith. She's recently abandoned her blog, so I don't want to link to it, but I think she reads me when she's naked and lonely, so use my comments to wish her a happy birthday, too.

This weekend, Amy and I will be going to stay the night in a haunted bed and breakfast that was featured on Ghost Hunters, so stay tuned for stories from that!

The inevitable unavailability of Avitable

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Tomorrow we leave for Charlotte, North Carolina. (Well, actually, a tiny one-horse burg named Lincolnton). I rented a Lincoln Navigator for the drive, which should be nice and relaxing.

I'm bringing the laptop, but I'm not sure if (a) I'll actually have internet and (b) how much super happy family fun time will be scheduled. So my time online will probably be rather limited, and I'll likely be marking everybody's blogs as "read" and commenting nowhere and not replying to my own comments. But it's Christmas, so you'll forgive me. Or else.

I'll still be on Twitter, and will be available by my cell phone for those of you who are so privileged.

In the meantime, even though we don't have an episode of Clearly, You're Retarded tomorrow night, I've created a page on Facebook for people who listen to the show. If you want, you can go here to become a fan of the show.

And for those of you who didn't go over to Tracy's to see my guest post, I'm reposting the photo here just for you:

Is this fucking week over yet?

Friday, December 14th, 2007

First, go see my guest post over at Tracy's. You can also see the full image here.

Secondly, go wish Britt's son Devin a happy birthday!

Thirdly, today is supposedly some blog crush day where you talk about your secret blog crush. Google it if you want more information – I'm too lazy. And while I have way too many blog crushes to list one in particular, I do expect several people to use their entire post today talking about me as their blog crush. Or there will be punishment!

Finally, I went to a friend's graduation from nursing school today over in Daytona Beach. The ceremony was quick, and it was nice seeing him get some recognition. On my drive home, since I was tired, I was blasting the radio and had the windows down, like usual. Flipping through the stations, I came across "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor. For some reason, this song struck a chord, and I started singing. Loudly. And there may have been some dancing going on, too. I pulled up to a stop light in full-on gay diva dance mode and looked to my right. There was a car with four girls in it, all of the windows down, and they were listening to the same radio station and dancing and singing themselves. We glanced at each other, shared a moment, and finished the song in unison. Then, I went home, watched sports, grabbed my crotch, and watched lesbian porn. Is there anything else I should do to get my man card back?
